My First Child

16 April 2012

I don't think I have quite explained to you the depth of my love for my dog, Corky.
He is essentially my child with wavy black fur. No, not the 'dress your dog up in clothes and marry it off to the neighborhood mutt' kind of child. No dog would be good enough for my precious...

Corky has been my dog for almost 5 years now. He's a 6 year old border collie/golden retriever/sometimes human mix. He is not only my loyal companion, he's my shadow. If I take a shower, he lays by the the door. I can't cook without tripping over him, go for a quick errand without him in the front seat or leave town without taking him with me. He looks at me like I hung the moon, and I simply can't get enough of my handsome guy.

Corky came from a shelter, where he was placed after he was found beaten and chained in someone's backyard. He was 6 months old when he was removed from the property, after the original owners moved and left him abandoned in their yard. They beat him with brooms, hoses and left him to starve. Luckily, someone found him before it was too late and took him to the shelter. I found him at 10 months old, and we haven't been apart for more than 10 days since.
He is a calm and gentle guy that is a complete gentleman indoors. He doesn't bark unless someone knocks on the door, is very careful with people, and actually worked as a therapy dog when I was in college. Hopefully we can get him back into the swing of things soon. Outdoors, he's a beast. He loves hiking, kayaking, jumping on trampolines, the snow and his most favorite thing is paddleboarding. No joke.
He's impossibly soft, and loves nothing more than to lay next to me on the couch with his head on my lap. He adores cats and will frequently share his bed (totally platonic) with one of our kitties, or let her clean his face and ears.
Corky and his best friend, Kitten
We got another dog 10 days before Christmas and she is high maintenance, to say the least. Micah wanted a dog that was more 'his' and that worshiped him like Corky worships me. Mission accomplished. She is a lot of crazy in a petite package, and drives him nuts. There are many times he has looked up at me with her hanging from his collar, tugging and growling, with eyes that say 'Are you serious with this? Why mom, why?'

I love him so, and have dog mom guilt every day for getting another dog that steals even an iota of attention from him. So, today, I have dedicated this post to my Corky Bear.

    1. I know- it's funny because I can somewhat understand what parents are talking about when they say "I can't picture life without them."

  2. What a sweet angel, and I love happy rescue stories. I will never understand how humans can be so unkind to animals. I have a little Yorkie that is just like my child, too - don't know what I'd do without him! Corky is such a handsome boy. :)

    1. Animal cruelty is 100% an issue with the person. So glad I could give him a second chance!

  3. What a beautiful dog! Inside and out. The kind of love you feel for your dog is special, I had mine for 3 years now and I never regretted a second, despite everyone saying I should wait until I had a "stable" life. But now living this awesome student life, I do travel and move a bit, but she tags along and is the best companion I can ask for. Dogs rule.

    1. Oh thank you. He's such a sweet, well behaved boy. I adopted him my junior year in college and then started grad school two years later, and he was my saving grace so many times during those years. Granted, you have to be responsible and know that your 'free' time will now be devoted to the dog, but they're so worth it!

  4. I love the way you love your dog because I am the exact same. We want children and lots of them but sometimes I think wow, I am actually going to love someone more than I love Ernie. How crazy is that. I love how dogs love you so unconditionally, through the good and bad. My heart hurts knowing he was abused but what an amazing thing you did taking him out of that situation. My sister and her husband got a very abused lab and now that she is 5 years old and grown out of her fears, she is so sweet and loving!

    1. It's amazing how much love you can devote to a dog, and to imagine anything more is nearly impossible. They gives us every reason in the world to love them, and they never try to cause us harm. So much better than people.

He definitely still shows his scars from that time, but he is so much more alive and happy, and I'm glad I could have a part in that!

  8. Corky Cutiepie!! What a sweet post, I rescued my cat Gordon from a shelter too and would be lost without him - he was also abused and is scared of absolutely everything - it's my duty to give him as many cuddles as possible!!

  16. My parents did the same thing. They had a dog that just worshipped my dad and Mom wanted a dog of her own. I think though, more than anything, Gidget (2nd puppy) is Brisco's (1st dog) puppy more than anything. At first Brisco was really excited over the new puppy.... you could tell he thought we'd gotten HIM a pet, but now I think he finds her like a little sister. Sometimes fun, but mostly annoying, always bugging you to play when you want to sleep.

    Your dog is adorable!

  18. Awwww so, so cute! He is very handsome! I just got a puppy and in the past week I feel like I couldn't live if she wasn't in my life. I haven't had a pet in my life for over 5 years, so I forgot what it was like to have such a great friend who loves you endlessly no matter what! Great post :)
