I never know what to wear for a job interview.

I know I can default to dress pants, a button up shirt, sweater and heels, but in my profession, we are required to dress comfortably but still maintain a professional demeanor. We do a lot of lifting, bending and are always at risk for getting something on our clothes. Usually, we have to do a working interview, which requires us to actually come in and work with clients, so typical business wear isn't functional.

Case in point: Last summer while I was interning, I ripped out, count it, 3 crotches in 3 different pairs of dress slacks. I dropped them off to be fixed and the seamstress pulled me aside and said 'I went ahead and double reinforced the crotch in all of these so this can't happen again...' Well golly.

So, I usually sit in limbo of what to wear. This is my default setup: chinos, loose fitting short sleeved blouse and a cardigan for versatility, comfort and functionality, all while looking professional. I'm a one woman show.
I think it is easy in my profession to default to scrubs (pajamas all day? yes please.) or beat up work clothes that you don't mind sacrificing for a stain or a tear. But I like my colors, my patterns, and my details, so this outfit was an easy choice for me to give an indication of who I am, while still looking like I work in a professional setting and not the circus.
Although, I would probably give up my favorite skirt to be the girl in sequins and a feather headdress riding the elephant.
Top: Forever 21 (2009)   Sweater: Forever 21 (2008)
Pants: NY&Co Outlet (2011)
Purse: Thrifted   Flats: Target (2012)

**Also, mad props to my husband, who shot these for me on his first time using a DSLR!**

  1. The yellow and purple are such a pretty color combo! My job interview outfits are really boring...black suit with a color blouse underneath!

    1. I was pretty impressed with him! I thought he'd need more coaching, but here he was, shooting off center and using different angles. I wasn't sure exactly what to do after I saw that!

  3. Wow I am impressed with the camera skills!!! I like your outfit too. I always have a hard time figuring out what to wear to work since I am a teacher. If I wear anything too nice, people ask me why I am so dressed up. There's also a good chance of it getting ruined. My home/weekend clothes and work clothes are totally different.

    1. Yeah, I feel ya! There are so many cute pieces I buy and think "Gah, I want to wear this to work but no way do I want it ruined!" so then I default to normal work stuff. But Forever 21, Old Navy sales and thrifting have been so helpful in helping me find cute stuff that I am not heartbroken over if it's ruined. I also have gotten very good at dodging incoming body fluids. That's a skill, right?
PS: Cute blog! Count me in as a follower!

    1. Ha I know! Apparently, I get down to business when I work. Pants be damned. You could tell this little old seamstress thought I was a whore in dress pants.

    1. Haha of course you do! I didn't even think about that until you said something! I don't really rock my alma mater's colors too much anymore (red and black) due to burnout from the college days, so it looks like I'm just stealing everyone elses! :)

  10. This is such a great outfit - I am a less is more kinda gal when it comes to dressing (especially for work). I like a good pair of trousers, a nice blouse and flat shoes (sneakers? What I don't where sneakers to work ...)

Found your blog via Jenni and am a new follower:) Can't wait to read more!

    1. Heavens no. Sneakers are... comfortable *gasp!*. I completely understand the less is more thing. I can't layer on the extras (though I wish I could) and so I try to make every piece count with the little details and color!

  12. I'm glad I found your blog over at Jenni's Story of My Life! I can relate to picking out the most appropriate comfortable and stylish interview outfit! Especially living in Texas where it can be so warm outside or driving to the interview and then you get in the office and its freezing! I love a good cardigan especially with a pop of color and design!

    1. Aw thanks! She's a sweet girl and a fabulous model (and I NEED her pink pants from the post today)! Yes, Texas is insanely difficult to dress for. Cold in the car, hot in the parking lot, cold in the store... It's a little like living in constant menopause! Is this a hot flash or is the air conditioning off?

  13. love, love, LOVE the outfit! I haaaate trying to pick out an outfit for an interview. Is there such thing as dressing up too much? Because I know there is such thing as NOT dressing up enough. It's so much work trying to impress people who we don't know, ha ha!
    Your shoes? I want!

    1. Seriously, if I had it my way, I'd just wear ball gowns to interviews so that I don't risk being under dressed. Over dressing just shows how excited you are/how much you want to impress them, no? Plus, who doesn't want a closet full of ball gowns?

The shoes are still at Target.com!
